Neocloud company shares dropped on Monday. The decline followed Elon Musk's statement that more than 200 firms in the sector could face an imminent collapse.
Companies such as Nebius, CoreWeave, and Iren saw significant retreats during pre-market trading. The sector was already struggling with investor skepticism regarding debt-fueled expansion and the ability to generate real returns from artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Musk stated that credit markets have cut off capital access for firms lacking solid revenue streams outside of AI data centers. He predicted a scenario of forced consolidation and bankruptcy for most of these businesses over the coming years.
Debate over the future of the sector intensified following comments from Chamath Palihapitiya regarding the excess computing capacity expected by 2027. The expectation is that many current investments will become underutilized or obsolete assets in the medium term.
The neocloud sector has accumulated sharp losses over the last month. Rising bond yields and pressure on credit default swaps reflect growing caution in the global financial market regarding the business models of these companies.
