CFTC Chair Michael Selig stated that the idea of autonomous agents performing financial transactions with Ether or creating memecoins is no longer science fiction. The executive emphasized that artificial intelligence technology is transforming global markets with the same impact as the internet or the steam engine.
During the Frontier Forum in Washington, Selig questioned the effectiveness of current rules designed for identifiable human participants. The regulatory body is now analyzing how to apply compliance standards to software that executes buy and sell orders without direct human intervention.
This debate emerges as young investors increasingly adopt automated tools for portfolio management. Recent studies indicate that the vast majority of millennial and Gen Z investors already use or are considering using AI to adjust their investments.
Authorities are seeking to determine who should be held accountable if an autonomous agent experiences failures or unexpected behaviors. Questions are arising regarding the need for new identification protocols, such as a 'know your agent' concept, to replace traditional customer verification practices.
Although the technology promises to democratize access to risk management tools previously exclusive to large institutions, the speed of autonomous operations creates challenges for market surveillance. The correlation of behaviors between different AI models may increase the complexity of financial oversight.
