European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde announced she will step down from her position on February 7, 2027. She formalized the decision before the ECB Governing Council and European Council President António Costa.

Lagarde has led the eurozone's monetary authority since July 2019. Her original term was scheduled to end in October 2027. The announcement came moments before the release of a new interest rate decision for the region.

The ECB Governing Council received the news with a standing ovation in recognition of her work. The succession process will be managed by the European Council in accordance with the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.

This leadership transition at a major global financial institution may trigger volatility in expectations regarding European monetary policy. Changes in central bank management often influence the strength of the euro against the dollar and the appetite for risk assets like Bitcoin.
