Shell reported a profit of 10.81 billion dollars for the quarter. This is nearly double the result from the same period last year. The performance was driven by refining margins that reached a record 42 dollars per barrel.
The result beat analyst projections that estimated a profit of 9.92 billion dollars. The company responded to the positive outlook by announcing a 5 billion dollar share buyback program for the next three months.
Geopolitical volatility and a shortage of refined products have pushed global energy prices higher. The company noted that the global energy system is facing severe disruptions that support current price levels.
Other companies in the sector such as TotalEnergies also posted significant gains driven by historic refining margins in Europe and worldwide. Brent crude prices rose significantly compared to last year due to supply constraints.
Shell management focused on reducing net debt even after the 16.4 billion dollar acquisition of the Canadian company ARC. The goal of the purchase was to expand the company's energy production capacity in the international market.
