Alphabet shares fell 10% in pre-market trading this Thursday. The decline follows the company reporting a negative free cash flow of 9.07 billion dollars for the third quarter. This result fell well short of the 2.70 billion dollars expected by the market.
The company maintained its capital expenditure forecast for the year between 195 billion and 205 billion dollars. Investors are showing concern regarding the financial returns on heavy investments in artificial intelligence. Revenue from search advertising grew 12% but failed to meet analyst projections.
This scenario contrasts with the performance of Microsoft, whose shares rose nearly 4% during the same period. Microsoft reported capital expenditures of 45.2 billion dollars, a figure lower than market expectations. Analysts note that Microsoft's strategy appears more structured and carries fewer operational uncertainties.
Alphabet is facing challenges with the monetization of its new artificial intelligence products. Competition from other chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude is putting pressure on the company's core search business. Current performance reflects difficulties in balancing the protection of its existing revenue model with necessary technological innovation.
If the decline holds through the market close, this will be Alphabet's worst performance following an earnings report since its initial public offering in 2004. The market remains focused on the tech giant's ability to convert massive spending into sustainable profits.
