North Korea fired approximately ten short-range ballistic missiles from the city of Wonsan. The weapons landed in the waters of the Sea of Japan this Thursday. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the military activity off the neighboring country's east coast.
Japan's Ministry of Defense also recorded the launch and reported that the projectiles fell outside the Japanese Exclusive Economic Zone. This movement takes place against a backdrop of intense diplomatic friction between Seoul and Pyongyang. The dispute involves responsibility for a landmine explosion that injured three South Korean soldiers in the Demilitarized Zone.
An investigation conducted by South Korea in conjunction with the United Nations attributed the planting of the mines to the North Korean government. Pyongyang denied the accusations and labeled the investigation a sham. The North Korean representative to the UN sent a letter to the Security Council rejecting any involvement in the incident.
Seoul had recently proposed opening military dialogues to restore communication channels and reduce instability in the region. The offer for talks and medical aid was rejected by authorities in the North. Leader Kim Jong Un maintains a rigid stance and has suspended most forms of bilateral cooperation in recent years.
Rising geopolitical instability on the Korean Peninsula increases risk aversion in global markets. Events involving nuclear powers tend to boost the dollar as a store of value and influence the volatility of higher-risk assets like Bitcoin.
