US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent declared that American leadership in digital assets is essential to maintain the global strength of the dollar. He spoke at an event in New York where he highlighted the transition from a hegemony based on military power to a structure rooted in technology.

Bessent categorized digital assets alongside artificial intelligence and semiconductors as pillars of economic competition with China. The Treasury intends to coordinate with the SEC and the CFTC to close regulatory gaps even as the CLARITY Act remains stalled in Congress.

Dollar-pegged stablecoins play a central role in this strategy. The secretary noted that these assets facilitate access to American currency in countries with high inflation. He also pointed out that reserves backing these digital currencies could boost demand for US Treasury bonds.

The American government seeks to consolidate a financial infrastructure that sustains the reach of the dollar on the international stage. The absence of a specific law regarding market structure leaves the responsibility of defining rules to federal regulators. The market is monitoring how these guidelines will affect the supply of digital assets and financial stability.
