The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission has filed a lawsuit against the state of Utah. The federal agency intends to block local efforts to restrict the operations of the prediction market platform Kalshi.

The Utah Attorney General began efforts to prevent the company from offering bets to residents, claiming the activity violates state anti-gambling laws. The state is seeking to recover up to 60 million dollars in profits allegedly obtained irregularly.

The federal agency argues that it holds exclusive jurisdiction over these markets. The lawsuit states that event contracts are swaps regulated by the central government and that Utah is attempting to bypass federal authority over registered exchanges.

The legal standoff reflects a broader dispute between state and federal authorities regarding the legality of betting on future events. Several U.S. states are facing similar lawsuits involving the same platform and the national regulator.

The lack of clarity regarding regulatory authority creates legal uncertainty for investors. This could increase regulatory risk for assets linked to prediction markets and impact the perception of dollar stability in financial innovation sectors.
