Utah Files Criminal Charges Against Kalshi and Its Founders
State accuses betting platform of illegal operations amid federal legal battle

The state of Utah has filed criminal charges against prediction market platform Kalshi and its cofounders. The company faces 13 felony counts and one misdemeanor for promoting online gambling. Attorney General Derek Brown stated that state law prohibits gambling regardless of the company's federal registration.
Local authorities based the lawsuit on tests conducted by an undercover agent. The investigator created an account on the platform and placed 12 bets on NFL and college league sporting events from within Utah. The indictment alleges that the company profited from fees charged on these operations which are prohibited by the state constitution.
Kalshi characterized the move as an overreach and a political maneuver. The company is appealing previous court rulings that allowed the state to enforce its local gambling prohibition laws. The firm argues that its operation holds federal authorization to function as a prediction market.
The conflict took on federal dimensions after the Commodity Futures Trading Commission sued Utah to prevent the enforcement of state laws. The regulatory agency maintains that it holds exclusive authority over these markets. The legal clash between state and federal authorities creates uncertainty regarding the jurisdiction of betting platforms for digital assets and events.
