Tech companies are converting mining sites into data centers to bypass energy and grid connection shortages.

The artificial intelligence boom has turned Bitcoin mining infrastructure into highly valuable assets. Tech companies are scouting for land and pre-licensed electrical substations to save years of waiting on expansion projects.

Although mining equipment cannot be used to train AI models, the power supply capacity is the primary target. The SWI group, for example, began a transition by acquiring Genesis Digital Assets and investing in NVIDIA hardware to focus on high-performance computing.

Converting a Bitcoin mine into a data center requires complex adaptations. It is necessary to install advanced cooling systems and sophisticated networks to support the density of the new processing hardware.

Contracts reveal that real profit depends on specific construction and financing agreements. In partnerships like the one between Core Scientific and CoreWeave, construction costs are offset by rent credits, shifting operational risks to the owners of the physical property.

The shift in energy demand may alter global resource allocation and increase pressure on the electrical grid. This impacts the risk perception regarding the long-term viability of digital asset mining operations.
