National Grid has taken a decisive step toward building the largest electrical substation in the United Kingdom in Teesside. The company acquired 73 acres of land at Dorman Point to facilitate the infrastructure required for artificial intelligence data centers.
The site is part of a public-private partnership known as Teesworks. The British government selected the area to host a data center project expected to span nearly 500,000 square meters.
The new substation will have a capacity of up to 3.2 gigawatts. The goal is to allow the region to compete for global technology investments that were previously directed toward the United States or the Middle East.
The UK government has classified data centers as critical infrastructure for the modern economy. National policy seeks to ensure the country has the capacity to store sensitive data on British soil.
Rising energy demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure may increase the cost of capital for technology projects and influence the allocation of resources in digital assets and energy.
