French Prosecutors Investigate Attempted Murder of Police Officers
Molotov cocktail attacks during Paris protests left officers injured and triggered an official inquiry.
The French justice system has launched an investigation into the attempted murder of public officials following attacks with incendiary devices. The incident occurred during the third weekend of demonstrations against the cost of living and the quality of public services in the country.
Footage captured a police officer engulfed in flames after being struck by a Molotov cocktail during the clashes. The Interior Ministry described the level of violence as extraordinary even though the scope of the unrest was smaller than in previous weeks.
The inquiry reveals that hundreds of protesters threw projectiles, stones, and bottles at approximately 15 gendarmes and police officers. Thirteen members of a single unit sustained injuries, including second-degree burns in some cases.
So far no suspects have been detained specifically for the firebomb attacks. Authorities are working to identify those responsible while tallying a total of 159 officers injured nationwide during the protests.
Social instability in major European economies may increase risk aversion in global markets. This puts pressure on the euro and boosts the demand for reserve assets like the dollar or Bitcoin.
