Russian Strikes Hit Power Grid as Kherson Ceasefire Ends
Bombardments leave thousands without power in Ukraine as humanitarian pause concludes
Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure left hundreds of thousands of homes without electricity over the weekend. The Ukrainian government confirmed damage across four regions and the implementation of emergency power cuts nationwide.
In the Vinnytsia region, a bombardment resulted in the deaths of two people including a 13-year-old girl. In response, Ukraine struck a missile fuel factory located in the Russian region of Rostov which sparked fires at four production facilities.
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the intensity of Russian attacks has reached high levels in recent days. He highlighted the shortage of ballistic missile interceptors and reinforced requests for more air defense systems from international partners.
Meanwhile, a limited humanitarian ceasefire in the Kherson region ended this Sunday night. The measure allowed for the evacuation of civilians from the city of Oleshky which had been under Russian occupation and isolated by landmines and drone strikes.
The increase in geopolitical instability and the destruction of critical infrastructure are raising risk aversion in global markets. This scenario tends to pressure the dollar as a store of value and impact the volatility of digital assets like Bitcoin.
