Israel Establishes Official Diplomatic Presence in Somaliland
First ambassador presents credentials in Hargeisa following formal recognition of the territory's independence
The Israeli government has formalized its diplomatic presence in Somaliland with the presentation of credentials by its first ambassador to the region. The ceremony took place in Hargeisa and included the groundbreaking for a new Israeli embassy.
This move solidifies the agreement reached in December 2025. At that time, Israel became the first United Nations member state to formally recognize Somaliland's independence. The territory declared autonomy in 1991, although Somalia continues to claim sovereignty over the area.
Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership. The territory's geographic location is central to controlling the Gulf of Aden and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. This route is vital for the flow of goods between the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.
The region is experiencing a period of instability due to the worsening conflict in Yemen. Rising military tensions near the strait have increased concerns regarding the security of global maritime routes. Israel has maintained defense cooperation ties with Somaliland since before the formal diplomatic recognition.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar stated that the exchange of ambassadors fulfills previously made commitments. Somaliland had already opened its own embassy in West Jerusalem in June of this year.
