A federal judge stops the Justice Department from demanding the rejection of ballots based on citizenship claims.

A federal judge in California has ordered the administration to halt threats of criminal prosecution against local election officials. The Department of Justice had been demanding that state workers set aside or invalidate ballots from individuals suspected of not being U.S. citizens.

The court order follows the delivery of letters and visits by armed agents to election offices. The federal government was pressuring officials to take action against approximately 20,000 registered voters in California. Local workers stated they could not comply with these demands because they violated existing state and federal laws.

Judge Trina Thompson emphasized that the government's actions interfere with election administration and could disenfranchise legal voters. The court found that these measures would cause chaos during the election. The administration also attempted to enforce similar restrictions in Washington state.

The Trump administration criticized the court ruling and maintained its claims regarding election fraud. The Department of Justice had even issued federal grand jury subpoenas against officials responsible for processing ballots. Civil rights groups filed lawsuits to protect the work of election staff.
