Candidate supports dialogue with Moscow amid Black Sea drone attacks

Acting Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova is leading the presidential runoff election. Exit polls suggest she secured approximately 51 percent of the vote. Her opponent, Andrey Gyurov, holds about 44 percent of voter preference.

The election takes place during a period of regional tension following drone attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea. The Bulgarian government is investigating whether these actions are directly linked to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Voter turnout remained low, ranging between 27 and 29 percent.

Iotova advocates for maintaining dialogue channels with the Russian government and opposes sending military aid to Ukraine. Her opponent, Gyurov, maintains a stance aligned with the Western bloc and criticized the lack of explicit condemnation of Russia during debates. Official results are expected to be released this Monday.

If the victory is confirmed, Iotova will be the first woman elected to the presidency in the country. The role in Bulgaria is largely ceremonial. The candidate assumed the position on an interim basis in January following the resignation of ally Rumen Radev.

Political instability in Eastern European countries may increase the perception of risk in the region and pressure global asset volatility. Changes in diplomatic stances regarding the Ukrainian conflict affect investor sentiment in emerging markets.
