Company resolves probe into Cash App anti-money laundering lapses as Bitcoin profits drop by half

Block has reached a preliminary settlement with the United States Department of Justice. The total payment reaches $964 million. Credits from previous regulatory resolutions reduce the final amount to $764 million.

The sum exceeds the $566 million profit recorded by the company in the third quarter. The agreement defers a criminal charge regarding failures in the anti-money laundering program for three years. The company disputes the methodology used by the government to calculate the penalty.

The gross profit from the company's Bitcoin segment suffered a 50% drop during the period. The result fell to $52 million compared to $104 million in the previous year. The reduction occurred mainly due to cuts in trading fees applied on Cash App.

The investigation originated from allegations regarding fraudulent accounts and inefficient identity checks. State regulators had already imposed previous fines for delays in reporting suspicious activities. The agreement still awaits final approval from the competent authorities.

Increased regulatory scrutiny on digital asset platforms raises operational risk and compliance costs for companies in the payments sector. The pressure on Bitcoin profit margins reflects the shift in fee strategy to maintain competitiveness in the global market.
