Greece Approves 10% Capital Gains Tax on Crypto Assets
New legislation takes effect in 2027 and exempts annual profits up to 500 euros for local investors.
The Greek parliament has approved a new legal framework for the taxation of digital assets. The measure establishes a 10% tax rate on capital gains from cryptocurrencies starting January 1, 2027.
Only net gains will be subject to taxation. The difference between the acquisition price and the transfer value forms the calculation base. Operational costs and trading fees can be deducted from this amount.
Investors will receive an annual exemption for profits up to 500 euros. If the net gain exceeds this limit, the 10% rate will apply to the entire amount calculated for the period. Direct exchanges between different cryptocurrencies will not be considered taxable events.
The use of digital assets to purchase goods or services will also trigger a tax obligation. Simple appreciation of an asset held in a wallet without a sale or exchange does not result in a tax charge.
Annual losses exceeding 500 euros may be used to offset future gains over a five-year period. The Greek government will publish additional guidelines on transparency and audit rules in the coming months.
The new standards expand controls on the origin of funds for acquiring digital assets. Cryptocurrency purchases must be justified based on declared income or proven capital sources.
