US Employee Engagement Hits Lowest Level Since 2011
Survey shows declining motivation among remote and hybrid workers as artificial intelligence reshapes the corporate landscape

Employee engagement in the United States fell to its lowest point since 2011 during the third quarter of 2026. The study measures professional focus and motivation in the workplace. Each percentage point in the survey represents approximately 1.6 million American workers.
The decline was most pronounced among employees working in remote or hybrid roles. The adoption of artificial intelligence tools by companies appears to be a central factor in this lack of interest. The current rate of 29% marks a two percentage point drop compared to the previous quarter.
The current landscape contrasts with the historic peak of engagement recorded in 2020 when the index reached 36%. Since that period, the figures have shown a steady downward trajectory. The survey interviewed more than 21,000 adults during August 2026 to compile the results.
Beyond general motivation, specific metrics regarding clarity of expectations and leadership support also retreated. Only 46% of respondents claim to know exactly what is expected of their roles. The sentiment that supervisors care about team well-being fell to 37%.
This workforce demobilization may pressure productivity and increase the risk of operational instability in large corporations. A weakening labor market could influence the perception of the dollar's value and the demand for reserve assets like Bitcoin during times of economic uncertainty.
