Investment firm Andreessen Horowitz announced it is renaming its digital assets division to a16z Frontier. The 2.2 billion dollar fund, originally launched in May with an exclusive focus on crypto, now encompasses artificial intelligence, autonomous machines and biology.

Partner Chris Dixon explained that blockchain infrastructure has become an integral part of mainstream financial services. The previous brand was considered too restrictive given the growing integration of this technology into products from traditional companies and fintechs.

The expanded strategy maintains support for crypto ventures and advocacy for industry regulations. The primary focus now includes frontier technologies that connect people and software agents.

This move reflects the view that company value should be measured by practical impact rather than just the underlying technology used. Applications such as cross-border payments and decentralized finance remain on the fund's radar under the new structure.

The diversification of capital into areas like biology and autonomous machines comes at a time of high demand for artificial intelligence investments. The change places blockchain projects in direct competition with other technological innovations during the firm's resource allocation meetings.
