New Jersey Lifts Coinbase Staking Ban
State drops $5 million fine and restores crypto yield services for local users
New Jersey has revoked its cease-and-desist order against Coinbase staking services. The move cancels a $5 million financial penalty previously imposed by the state securities regulator.
The decision was formalized on October 30 by the acting bureau chief, Keith A. Alt. The agency withdrew the restrictions without issuing a final judgment on the merits of the case. This leaves the door open for potential future regulatory actions against the company.
Coinbase confirmed the development in its third-quarter report. CEO Brian Armstrong stated that customers in the region should regain access to staking services soon.
Staking allows investors to lock up crypto assets to validate transactions on blockchain networks in exchange for rewards. The exchange manages this process for users and keeps a portion of the earnings as a service fee.
Other U.S. states including California, Maryland, Wisconsin, and Washington maintain active cases against the company. The crypto sector is seeking political support from both parties ahead of the U.S. midterm elections.
