The British government announced an increase in the tax-free threshold for income generated through side hustles. Starting in April 2027, the limit for exempt earnings will climb from £1,000 to £3,000 annually.
The measure aims to benefit approximately 1.4 million people who use hobbies or product reselling as a supplementary source of income. The growth of digital commerce platforms has fueled the demand for these activities in recent years.
Official data reveals that the number of people earning money through online sales platforms jumped from 450,000 in 2024 to 2.6 million last year. The higher ceiling seeks to reduce the administrative burden for these informal workers.
It is estimated that 400,000 taxpayers will see a direct reduction in their tax bills with an average saving of £380. Furthermore, about 100,000 individuals will be exempt from the requirement to report their earnings to the British tax authorities.
Experts highlight that the change simplifies financial management for those running small side businesses. Taxpayers will be able to choose between using the new exemption threshold or deducting operating expenses when calculating taxable profit.
