A failure in Google cloud computing services caused widespread disruptions across the United Kingdom this Tuesday. The issue hit the europe-west2-b zone and impacted the operations of financial institutions and judicial bodies.
Customers of banks including HSBC, Lloyds, and Revolut faced difficulties moving money or making payments. The instability also paralyzed hearings in British courts during the period of downtime.
Google attributed the failure to a power event at its London data center. The company later stated that the situation was mitigated for the majority of affected users.
Failures in critical digital infrastructure increase the perception of operational risk in the financial sector and may boost demand for decentralized assets as a hedge against technological centralization.
