Natural gas prices in the European market reached 97 euros per megawatt-hour this Monday. This figure represents the highest level recorded since late 2022. The increase reflects immediate concerns regarding supply security during the winter months.
The escalation in costs comes amid reports of potential attacks on facilities in Iran involving the United States and Israel. The market is reacting to the risk of global energy supply disruptions. Brent crude remains at elevated levels near 115 dollars per barrel.
Europe faces a scenario where stockpiles are below the seasonal average. Storage levels are at 75 percent while the historical average for this period exceeds 80 percent. Reduced exports from Qatar and high consumption during the summer have contributed to the depletion of reserves.
The United Kingdom shows specific vulnerability due to its reliance on imports and low local storage capacity. British households face forecasts of a 16 percent increase in energy bills starting in January. The estimated annual cost for the typical consumer is expected to reach 2,000 pounds.
The rise in energy prices puts pressure on inflation and increases the perception of systemic risk in global markets. This scenario of energy uncertainty tends to strengthen the dollar as a store of value and may increase the volatility of risk assets such as Bitcoin.
