eBay has announced a 9% reduction in its total workforce. The measure affects approximately 1,000 employees at the company. The goal is to adjust the operational structure to focus on sectors showing the most expansion.
This is the second staff reduction carried out by the company this year alone. In February, the marketplace had already laid off about 800 employees, which represented 6% of its workforce at the time. CEO Jamie Iannone stated in an internal memo that the current strategy requires careful choices regarding where to invest.
The company has been reducing its headcount in recent years while increasing spending on artificial intelligence. eBay also finalized the purchase of the clothing resale platform Depop for 1.4 billion dollars in July. The deal aims to attract users from Gen Z and the millennial generation.
Cost-cutting at major tech companies reflects a search for operational efficiency in a scenario of economic uncertainty. Corporate spending reduction moves may increase risk aversion in the financial market and put pressure on high-volatility assets like Bitcoin.
