Thousands of protesters gathered at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin this Saturday. The movement is part of a wave of student-led demonstrations spreading across several German cities.
The organization known as Gen Z Regelt called for rallies in 34 locations including Munich, Cologne, and Frankfurt. Approximately 180,000 people registered to participate in the demonstrations throughout the day.
Participants are expressing dissatisfaction with the rising cost of living and budget cuts to education and social services. Frustration is mounting as the government increases investment in the military sector.
Students report financial difficulties in maintaining their studies and the need to seek part-time jobs. The group is seeking alternatives in the face of reduced public funding for essential areas.
Although most of the events remained peaceful, there were reports of clashes between protesters and police in Cologne. Authorities had to intervene to contain the march in that area.
Social instability in major European economies could increase risk aversion in global markets and pressure the volatility of the euro against the dollar.
