The Federal Reserve has identified a structural risk in bank financing for the private credit sector. Credit funds record interest as revenue even without receiving cash payments. This happens because contracts allow companies to add charges to the total debt balance.

US-based private credit vehicles accumulated $349 billion in debt to banks by the end of 2025. This total includes $181 billion from business development companies and $150 billion from private debt funds. The remainder comes from funds with restricted liquidity.

There is a significant operational gap. While funds accept payments in additional debt from borrowers, creditor banks demand cash payments. This difference creates liquidity pressure if banks decide to execute collateral or demand immediate loan repayment.

The private credit sector in the United States currently holds over $2.6 trillion in assets. The Federal Reserve has adjusted the classification of these bank loans to increase transparency regarding systemic risk. The measure facilitates monitoring of the connections between the traditional banking system and non-bank lenders.

Although banks have contractual protections and priority in repayment, executing these guarantees could force funds to seek liquidity quickly. The situation exposes the fragility of the credit chain in a scenario where the cash flow of final borrowers does not keep pace with fund accounting.
