Representatives from nearly 200 countries finalized a new action plan in Yerevan to curb the degradation of nature. The consensus followed two weeks of intense negotiations in the Armenian capital. The central goal is to renew the commitment made in 2022 to reverse the loss of species and ecosystems.

The 2022 agreement established 24 targets, including the protection of 30% of the planet's land and seas by 2030. UN reports suggest that the world is on track to meet only one of these objectives. Scientists warn that the current extinction rate is one hundred times higher than the natural rate due to human activities.

The main obstacle to meeting these goals remains the lack of financial resources. In 2022, nations pledged to allocate 30 billion dollars for nature restoration by the end of the decade. The plan also envisioned the mobilization of another 170 billion dollars from private sources.

Experts emphasize that the stability of ecosystems is fundamental to the global economy. Despite budgetary difficulties, there are successful conservation examples, such as the recovery of elephant and tiger populations. The new pact seeks to correct the course before the 2030 deadline.
