Somali Supreme Court Voids Presidential Term Extension
Court ruling invalidates government extension and mandates new elections amid political crisis.
The Supreme Court of Somalia has declared the extension of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s term illegal. The court ruled that constitutional changes approved by parliament cannot be applied retroactively to the current government term.
The president’s four-year term officially expired in May. The administration attempted to extend its stay in office by one year through legislative amendments passed in March.
The court also invalidated the dismissal of Chief Justice Bashe Yusuf Ahmed. The judges stated that the executive branch lacks the authority to remove the magistrate without following established constitutional procedures.
Political leaders have been ordered to define an electoral plan within 30 days. The court requires national elections to be held within 90 days, which casts doubt on the government’s previous timeline for next year.
Political instability increases geopolitical risk in the Horn of Africa, which may raise volatility in emerging market assets and influence global risk sentiment for Bitcoin investors.
