Protests in Paris escalated into violent clashes between demonstrators and police this past Saturday. The day began peacefully but the situation changed drastically after nightfall.
Groups threw objects and fireworks at security forces. In response, authorities used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowds gathered in the streets.
Around 70,000 police officers were deployed across France for the second consecutive weekend. The Interior Ministry recorded the participation of approximately 400,000 people in the national demonstrations.
Authorities made nearly 1,000 arrests during the riot control operations. Local reports suggest there is no expectation of an immediate reduction in the social tension gripping the French capital.
Political instability in major European economies tends to increase risk aversion in global markets. This may strengthen the dollar as a store of value and pressure high-volatility assets like Bitcoin.
