The International Monetary Fund projects that Bangladesh's GDP per capita will exceed India's this year. This metric divides the total output of goods and services by the number of inhabitants. The figure of 2,886 dollars for Bangladesh contrasts with the 2,749 dollars forecast for the Indian economy.
Despite this nominal gain, India's economy remains nearly eight times larger than its neighbor's. The country possesses a robust industrial base and a consolidated technology sector. India also maintains a higher economic growth rate, estimated at 7 percent compared to 3.6 percent for Bangladesh.
The picture shifts when data is adjusted for purchasing power parity. This metric accounts for local living costs and what money can actually purchase. Under this criterion, India holds a clear advantage with a GDP per capita of 12,998 dollars, while Bangladesh records 10,884 dollars.
Bangladesh faces significant challenges such as high inflation, which has reached 8.7 percent. The country bases its growth on the textile industry, remittances, and its female workforce. India manages lower inflationary pressures at 5 percent, maintaining greater consumption capacity for its population.
