The Latvian government is developing a regulatory framework for the tokenization of real-world assets. Economy Minister Viktors Valainis expects the rules to be implemented by the first half of 2027.
The project prioritizes the commercial real estate sector as a starting point for asset digitization. The initiative also includes the possibility of tokenizing national government bonds in the future.
A technical assessment of the necessary legal changes is still underway. The initial deadline for completing this study passed in October but the government is keeping the topic on the agenda for the next administration.
The Ministry of Economy is collaborating with the central bank and blockchain industry representatives. The primary goal is to attract international companies and increase tax revenue through new financial opportunities.
Strict anti-money laundering controls are essential for the project's success. The government aims to ensure full transparency before allowing crypto-based products to operate in the local market.
