Honda has labeled the potential increase in tariffs on vehicles and parts from Canada as catastrophic. President Donald Trump threatened to double the current 25% rate to 50% starting January 1. This measure would take effect if a new trade pact is not established between the two nations by the end of this year.
Executive Jennifer Thomas stated that the automotive sector relies on a trilateral agreement that includes Mexico. Industry representatives advocate for maintaining the model established by the USMCA agreement. Uncertainty regarding trade rules creates concern due to the constant flow of parts crossing borders for vehicle assembly.
The United States government decided not to automatically extend the current trade pact. The agreement now undergoes an annual review process instead of a long-term extension. President Trump criticized the trade relationship with Canada and demanded changes to current conditions.
Honda maintains significant operations in Canadian territory, although most vehicles sold in the United States are manufactured domestically. The company is monitoring recent negotiations regarding the reduction of duties on materials such as aluminum. The sector aims to avoid an increase in operational costs that would affect the competitiveness of automakers in the region.
