The cryptocurrency market is bracing for the expiry of $11 billion in Bitcoin options this Friday on the Deribit exchange. This amount represents one-third of all open interest on the platform and exceeds August's volume by 70 percent.
The contracts total approximately 135,000 Bitcoin units, split between 88,700 call options and 46,500 put options. The current ratio shows that bullish bets outweigh bearish ones by nearly two to one.
The expiration comes shortly after the Federal Reserve held interest rates between 3.75 percent and 4.00 percent. Two committee members voted for a hike, which reinforces caution regarding the cost of credit and the appeal of risk assets compared to government bonds.
Although the nominal value is high, about 86 percent of the contracts are out of the money and are expected to expire worthless. The actual settlement should involve approximately $130 million, a figure much lower than the total initially announced.
Investors are monitoring the so-called max pain price, situated at $78,000, where the majority of contracts lose their value. The most optimistic bets are concentrated at the $95,000 and $100,000 levels, while protective contracts are focused on the $70,000 mark.
