OpenAI Launches Program to Cut Data Center Power Consumption
The initiative aims to ease grid strain during emergencies and prevent extra costs for residential and small business customers.
OpenAI has announced the Grid Protectors program to manage energy consumption at its future artificial intelligence facilities. The goal is to lower electricity demand during peak periods or national supply emergencies.
The company intends to coordinate actions with power utilities to temporarily suspend electricity usage. The plan also includes exploring battery storage and on-site power generation at operational locations.
The first practical example is taking place in Effingham County, Georgia. OpenAI has signed a 25-year agreement with Georgia Power for a 3,200-megawatt demand, allowing for cuts of up to 1,000 megawatts during critical moments.
The contract mandates that the company must cover all infrastructure costs required to support its operations. This measure seeks to prevent energy expenses from being passed on to other customers on the power grid.
Georgia Power projects $950 million in annual savings for consumers starting in 2029, an estimate that covers the utility's broader portfolio of large customers and expected growth rather than just the OpenAI project. It is also running a communications campaign to shift public perception regarding these facilities.
