Nvidia Restricts Data Center Access for Chinese Clients
Cloud providers must now allocate half of their capacity to non-Chinese firms to curb the nation's tech growth.
Nvidia has begun instructing data center partners to limit their exposure to Chinese clients. The new rule requires that at least 51% of cloud computing services be allocated to companies based outside of China.
These instructions were delivered verbally by the company's sales teams and regional representatives. The measure aims to restrict the ability of Chinese firms to train advanced artificial intelligence models using external infrastructure.
These new compliance standards apply to Nvidia clients worldwide. The requirement only affects new lease agreements and does not alter contracts that are already in effect.
The implementation took place in the third quarter of this year. This move is intended to preempt criticism from U.S. lawmakers regarding the presence of the company's technology in the Chinese market.
The United States government continues its efforts to block China's access to high-performance chips. The strategy includes cracking down on intermediaries that facilitate the use of advanced hardware by Chinese entities.
