Malaysia Becomes Strategic Hub for AI Data Centers
The country attracts billions in investment from Chinese and US firms for data processing infrastructure.
Malaysia has emerged as a global hub for artificial intelligence. Tech giants from China and the United States are building massive data centers in the state of Johor. The area once housed palm oil and pineapple plantations.
Chinese companies like ByteDance use this infrastructure to access advanced Nvidia chips. These components face export restrictions imposed by Washington on Chinese territory. The location in Malaysia allows them to bypass such geographic limitations.
The country offers low-cost land and affordable energy for these companies. Proximity to undersea cables that connect China to the world also facilitates data flow. The local government has chosen to welcome investments from both sides of the tech dispute.
The impact on local infrastructure is significant. There are currently 65 data center projects in various stages of development. Electricity consumption has already reached 2 gigawatts and could hit 10 gigawatts once planned projects are completed.
This rapid expansion raises concerns about the use of water and power resources in the region. US authorities are closely monitoring Chinese access to high-performance semiconductors installed in the country. Malaysia is consolidating a central position in the global processing chain.
