Data center companies known as neocloud are under scrutiny due to high debt levels. Firms such as CoreWeave, Nebius, IREN, and Applied Digital operate warehouses filled with high-performance computers leased to tech giants. The sector is currently facing an intense debate regarding its financial health and long-term sustainability.

Gartner analysts predict that most of these companies will cease independent operations by 2030. Experts at Forrester project imminent acquisitions due to financial fragility. The debt accumulated by these firms reaches tens of billions of pounds, sparking concern among investors.

The business model for these companies relies on long-term contracts with major clients to secure loans. They use artificial intelligence chips and the contracts themselves as collateral to raise capital. The high cost of hardware requires upfront payments that strain cash flow.

Shares of companies like CoreWeave have seen significant value drops over the last month. Debt investors are demanding higher returns due to the perceived risk in the sector. CoreWeave CEO Mike Intrator described the market reaction as irrational and defended the strength of the operational model.

Some of these firms have origins linked to cryptocurrency mining. The historical volatility of that segment adds an extra layer of uncertainty for those monitoring the industry. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent downplayed the impact of these companies on the global technology ecosystem.
