Data from Bitquery reveals that most small liquidity positions on Uniswap v3 perform worse than simply holding the tokens. The survey analyzed closed positions across eight Ethereum network pools between October 2025 and October 2026.
Before deducting gas fees, 51% of positions under $1,000 outperformed the buy-and-hold strategy. After paying operational costs, that percentage drops sharply to 18%. The median transaction cost for this specific group was 67 cents.
The impact of fees is less severe on larger deposits where costs are diluted across more significant capital. In a universe of over 71,000 analyzed positions, the overall success rate fell from 49% to 34% after accounting for network expenses.
The study compares the final token value and collected fees against the strategy of holding assets in a wallet. Even if a position shows nominal appreciation, it may be considered inefficient if the gain is lower than the base asset growth. The Uniswap v4 structure aims to mitigate these costs through new accounting mechanisms.
For the crypto market, the high sensitivity of network fees on the profitability of decentralized protocols affects capital allocation in liquidity strategies. High operational costs may restrict the participation of smaller investors in automated markets.
