The rise of quantum computing is challenging Bitcoin's security. Muneeb Ali, founder of the Stacks project, states that technological uncertainty is already impacting the interest of large institutional investors.
The network has a history of slow and complex updates. Experts estimate that Bitcoin needs a clear transition roadmap by 2028 to avoid systemic risks. The final deadline for this adaptation would be 2030 according to guidelines from the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
Even if developers reach a consensus on protection, implementation would require years of work. Asset holders would need to migrate their balances to new addresses compatible with quantum technology. Delays in this process could undermine the confidence of those who use the asset as a store of value.
While the debate over security gains momentum, the financial sector is seeing other developments. Ripple received final approval from the United States regulator to operate as a national custodial bank. VanEck also expanded its offerings by including Bitcoin in a new exchange-traded fund.
The perception of technological vulnerability may increase volatility and the risk premium of Bitcoin compared to traditional assets during scenarios of macroeconomic uncertainty.
