A joint operation by the FBI and the Brooklyn district attorney’s office led to arrests and the seizure of digital assets linked to a fraud network aimed at Russian-speaking communities. Targeted Facebook ads lured victims to fake investment advisers, who siphoned off tens of millions of dollars.
After the initial theft, the criminals returned to the same victims with offers of fraudulent services to recover the lost funds. The two-stage victimization increased the total damage and exposed the vulnerability of specific language groups on social networks.
The case shows the growing ability of US authorities to trace transactions on-chain. Advertising platforms remain the main channel for sophisticated scams, while cross-border cooperation allows investigators to dismantle complex criminal structures.
