The Bank of Russia has ordered an end to direct Bitcoin trading between individuals starting July 1, 2027. The country is among the world’s largest markets for the cryptocurrency, and the measure requires users to migrate to licensed exchanges.
Earlier restrictions already blocked transfers from digital accounts to self-custody wallets. The government is seeking to concentrate all volume in supervised entities. Until the deadline, peer-to-peer transactions remain permitted.
The precedent could influence other countries with tight capital controls. Local liquidity is expected to shift to centralized platforms. Investors with exposure to the Russian market lose their direct route to liquidity.
