Sweden’s central bank has recommended that parliament prepare the legal framework for a digital krona. The monetary authority warns that stablecoins pegged to foreign currencies could come to dominate domestic payments if no viable public alternative exists.

The Nordic country has one of the lowest rates of cash use in the world. Monetary sovereignty now depends on a state digital infrastructure that guarantees universal access and privacy. The Riksbank’s report makes a final issuance conditional on prior legal clarity.

The move mirrors a global race among central banks. The ECB is pressing ahead with the digital euro, and dozens of countries are testing sovereign digital currencies. The technical design and privacy guarantees will determine whether the public adopts or rejects the new form of money.
