US House Democrats Plan New Crypto Regulation
Proposal seeks to expand SEC powers and restrict Trump's activities in the digital asset sector
Democratic lawmakers in the US House of Representatives are coordinating a bill focused on the structure of the crypto asset market. The initiative aims to revive previous proposals from Representative Maxine Waters that were rejected in recent votes.
The text under discussion envisions a more central role for the Securities and Exchange Commission, known as the SEC. Conversely, the influence of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the CFTC, would be reduced in monitoring the sector.
The proposal incorporates consumer protection guidelines that include audit requirements and custody rules. The bill is also expected to contain specific ethical clauses to limit the involvement of federal authorities and President Donald Trump in the digital currency market.
Industry sources suggest that Republicans view the move as a political communication strategy. There is no official consolidated text yet because current information stems from internal discussions among congressional aides.
The shift in global regulation could change the risk profile of digital assets by intensifying state supervision over trading platforms.
