Monetary authority expands tokenized deposit operations with central bank currency for round-the-clock transactions.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority announced the expansion of the EnsembleTX project to allow for the settlement of tokenized deposits around the clock. The system uses central bank currency to enable transfers between financial institutions outside of traditional banking hours.

The project includes participation from 12 banks and 20 industry firms. Institutions such as HSBC, Standard Chartered, and Bank of China are part of the initiative. The mechanism separates the role of customer deposits from the reserves used for final settlement between banks.

Companies like BlackRock and Ant International are already using the infrastructure for corporate treasury management and operations in tokenized money market funds. Continuous settlement facilitates the movement of digital assets on licensed platforms.

Securities and Futures Commission CEO Julia Leung stated that the measure reinforces support for the secondary trading of tokenized funds. Actual availability for the end investor still depends on the specific arrangements of each participating bank and platform.

This evolution in global financial infrastructure reduces operational friction and increases liquidity efficiency for digital assets. The integration of tokenized central bank currencies into 24/7 systems streamlines institutional transactions and treasury management.
