Paraguay's largest digital bank collapsed months after raising $350 million and receiving investment from Hungary's OTP.

Ueno bank, the leading digital financial institution in Paraguay, has been placed under intervention by the country's Central Bank. The collapse occurred shortly after the bank executed the largest unsecured bond issuance in the history of the Paraguayan financial sector, totaling $350 million.

The fundraising operation was coordinated by Bank of America and J.P. Morgan. Just weeks before the intervention, the institution published an open letter to reassure investors and the market regarding its financial stability.

Hungary's OTP bank was also affected by the situation, having injected $47 million into the fintech late last year. The European group clarified that the investment represented a minority stake of less than 10% and did not grant management control over the business.

The fintech had highlighted in its communications that it held $814 million in external funding sources. Even with support from major international institutions and partnerships with companies like Mastercard, this structure did not prevent the entity's downfall.

The case serves as a warning regarding volatility in emerging markets and the need for rigorous analysis of the quality of assets issued by debtors. Instability in banks within neighboring countries may increase regional risk perception and pressure the demand for safer reserve assets.
