Scottish Mortgage Fund Exits Tesla and Trims SpaceX Stake
Long-term investor cashes in billions after more than a decade of exposure to Elon Musk's companies.
The Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust completed the sale of all its Tesla shares in April. This decision ends an investment cycle that began in 2013 and generated approximately 6.2 billion dollars in realized profits for the firm.
Beyond exiting the automaker, the fund reduced its stake in SpaceX. The aerospace company's share of the portfolio dropped from 15% in September to 11.1% as of last Wednesday. This move is part of a disciplined management strategy following the company's growth.
The initial investment in SpaceX took place in 2018 when the company had a market valuation of nearly 31 billion dollars. The significant appreciation of the business, driven by the Starlink network and the launch sector, contributed to a 31.5% return in the fund's net asset value for the six-month period ending in September.
The firm justified its exit from Tesla by citing the current stock price, which it believes already reflects expectations regarding robotics and autonomy. The fund also highlighted increased competition in the automotive sector as a factor for reviewing its high-growth asset portfolio.
Proceeds from the sales were used to pay down debt and reduce the fund's leverage. The move reinforces the practice of taking profits on assets that have reached high levels of valuation over the years.
