US Fuel Prices Hit Record Highs on Election Day
Gasoline and diesel reach historic peaks as Brazil projects a decade of import reliance
Gasoline and diesel prices in the United States reached record levels on this election day. The national average for regular gasoline hit 4.15 dollars per gallon. This figure surpasses the previous record of 3.80 dollars set in 2022. Diesel also reached an all-time high with an average cost of 6.29 dollars per gallon.
The financial impact on American families is significant. The additional cost to consumers since the start of the conflict with Iran totals 151 billion dollars. This amount equals an extra expense of over 1,100 dollars per household in the United States. This analysis considers data collected since the year 2000.
In Brazil, the long-term outlook points to continued external dependence. The Ten-Year Energy Expansion Plan projects that the country will keep importing diesel for the next ten years. Demand for the fuel is expected to grow 19% by 2036. Domestic production will not keep pace with this consumption rate.
The Brazilian government estimates that refining capacity will grow only 10% during this period. Brazil will export a large portion of its produced crude oil. Self-sufficiency is expected only for gasoline and aviation kerosene. Fleet electrification and the increased ethanol content in gasoline help support this projection.
