UK Energy Secretary May Reject Rosebank Oil Field
Decision on one of the North Sea's largest oil fields is expected by year-end

Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh is leaning toward denying approval for the Rosebank oil field. The project is considered one of the largest in the North Sea. This stance represents a potential setback for the local energy industry.
Fahnbulleh stated that the logic applied to the recently approved Jackdaw gas field does not extend to the Rosebank project. She noted that Jackdaw gas serves the domestic market. In contrast, Rosebank oil would be primarily destined for export.
The Secretary emphasized the need to align every decision with climate goals and carbon budgets. The Rosebank field would emit about seven times more carbon than the Jackdaw project. The assessment suggests that the impact on UK energy security would be limited.
A final decision has not yet been made and could face internal political interference. The British government maintains that each application will be reviewed on its own merits. There is a possibility that the case could be brought to a parliamentary vote if approval is granted.
Uncertainty regarding fossil fuel supply and energy transition policies could increase volatility in commodity prices. Changes in energy exploration strategies create uncertainty for future investment in the sector.
