Stock Manipulation Scandal Threatens Turkey's Financial Market
Turkish firms face potential global index exclusion following asset price fraud

Turkey's financial market is facing a severe crisis after the discovery of a stock price manipulation scheme. Asset managers allegedly inflated the value of companies with low liquidity and few shares in circulation.
The country's regulatory authority, the SPK, stated that the movements lacked economic fundamentals. The collapse of investment funds managed by Pusula Portföy and Tera Portföy triggered a wave of forced liquidations that impacted approximately 1 trillion Turkish liras.
The BIST 100 index recorded a 16.7% drop in September alone. In response, the Istanbul Stock Exchange removed dozens of stocks from its main benchmark to contain damage to the local market's integrity.
MSCI, a global index provider, has threatened to downgrade Turkey's status as an emerging market. The institution suspended changes to indices involving Turkish stocks until there is greater transparency regarding asset ownership and the fight against coordinated trading practices.
Institutional instability and the potential exclusion from global indices increase market risk for emerging market assets.
